Flash floods are exactly what the name suggests: floods that happen in a flash! They generally develop within a few hours of a storm and can occur miles from where the heavy rain falls. Urbanized areas are especially prone to flash floods. The large amounts of concrete and asphalt surfaces make it difficult for water to penetrate the soil.
Flash flooding is one of the largest causes of weather-related death nationwide. If you encounter flooding, NEVER cross the area. Six inches of water can knock an adult off their feet and 12-18 inches of fast-moving water can float away a full-size SUV. Turn around and find another way to travel or wait until the water clears.
The Town of Fountain Hills and Maricopa County Flood Control District are dedicated to reducing the risk to people and property from floods. We study where flooding occurs, identify hazards, and then take action to reduce those hazards.
The District is conducting a flood hazard study in the Fountain Hills area. During this part of the study, we are asking for any information you have about flooding. This could be pictures, videos, or just knowledge of where flooding happens in your neighborhood. The District team collects this information and uses it to build and test a computer model of flooding.
