[ARCHIVED] National Volunteer Week a Chance to Say Thanks, Get Involved

Volunteer

With both hot and cold meals carefully packed and insulated bags filled to the brim, Beverly and Glen Greytak load up their white SUV and hit the road, ready to deliver roughly a dozen meals to neighbors in need.

“A lot of people can’t get out to get food,” Beverly said. “A lot of the people are just happy to see people outside of their home.”

The Greytaks volunteer with Home Delivered Meals, taking on a shift about once a month. Their mission is simple: provide food and a friendly face to those who could use a hand.

“They appreciate it on your way up the stairwell,” Glen added.

Each delivery route takes the couple about 60 to 90 minutes. Meals range from barbecue to fish and more, with dietary restrictions and special instructions neatly marked on a sheet, ensuring each recipient gets exactly what they need.

“I’m a senior myself, but time to give back a little bit,” Glen said. “This is the least I can do for an hour and a half or two hours of work.”

Home Delivered Meals is just one of many ways residents can give back. Nearly 700 volunteers dedicate their time to a variety of programs and initiatives throughout the year.

“There’s a huge, deep sense of pride in our community,” said Kim Wickland, the Town's Volunteer Supervisor. “Our volunteers are the heart.”

Volunteer opportunities come in all forms, with flexible schedules and commitments to suit anyone looking to get involved.

“I feel good,” Glen said as he navigated their delivery route.

At each stop, Glen pulls the right meal from the trunk and hands it off to Beverly, who walks it to the door with a smile, and often with the homeowner’s newspaper tucked under her arm.

“It feels good to help people,” Beverly said.
